  • Defining Song of the 1990s

I have looked and can not find a similar type thread that is similar to this one/or the Defining Song's of the 1970s and 1980s. Which do you think that your's might be?

A few i'd pick though i'm unsure if that I could place them in order as equal's would be

    James- Sit Down
    Oasis - Wonderwall
Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
    Robbie Williams - Angels
Robbie Williams - She's The One
Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life

    Thanks for any replies,

    80sChav

Although it should be hard to pick one song to define a decade, when I saw the title of this thread, the old record player in the head immediately kicked off......."A great philosopher once wrote - Naughty Naughty, Very Naughty!!!!'

    'Ebeneezer Goode' by The Shamen.
"We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner!"

Re: Defining Song of the 1990s

I guess were going pop on this one then. I'm going to go with something that goes against all my musical tastes and Say MMMBop by the band Hanson.

Now before you start to cuss me up hear me out. Or rather, take a look over the lyrics.

      Oh oh oh oh oh
      Yeah

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
      Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
      Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care?
      Ooooh ok yeah

      Chorus
      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
      Ba du
      Yeah
      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
      Ba du
      Yeah

      Oh yeah
      In an Mmmbop they're gone
      Yeah yeah

Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows
      Oh, no one knows

      Chorus

      Oh
      Yeah oh

In an mmm bop they're gone
      Oh yeah oh
      In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmm bop they're not there
      In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmm bop they're not there
      In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
      In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
      Until you lose your hair
      Oh
      But you don't care

      Chorus

      Yeah
      Oh yeah oh oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And hen you get old and start losing your hair
Tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care?
      Oh care

      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
      Ba du, yeah
      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
      Ba du, care

      Can you tell me? oh
No you can't 'cause you don't know
      Can you tell me? oh
You say you can but you don't know
      Can you tell me? oh
      (Which flower's going to grow?)
No you can't 'cause you don't know
      Can you tell me? oh
(If it's going to be a daisy or a rose?)
You say you can but you don't know
      Can you tell me? oh
      (which flower's going to grow?)
No you can't 'cause you don't know
      Can you tell me? oh
You say you can but you don't know
      Oh yeah
You say you can but you don't know
      You dont know
      You dont know, oh

      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
      Ba du, yeah
      Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
      Ba du, care

      Oh
      Can u tell me? oh
No you can't 'cause you don't know
      Can u tell me? oh
You say you can but you don't know
      Can u tell me? oh
No you can't 'cause you don't know
      Can u tell me?
You say you can but you don't know
What you have there is a song about your own mortality, how friendships and relationships are fragile and how decisions you make in life ultimately mean jack all because if you don't look after what's important now you'll die a lonely old misery with nobody around to truly love you. All wrapped up in a sugary sweet diabetes giving melody that hides the true nature of this song. I think even the most prolific of shoegazers would have trouble writing a song as contrasting as this. The MMMBop parts are the equivalent of Bono clicking his fingers to represent a death in Africa, except this time instead of being a uncomfortable section on TV, this directly effect you and the people around you.

      So yeah. MMMBop it is.

Re: Defining Song of the 1990s

Yeah, Smells Like Teen Spirit is definitely up there, Nevermind is just a perfect album, not a bad song on there.

            Suede - Film Star
Alanis Morissette - Head Over Feet
            Pearl Jam - Evenflow
Alice In Chains - Man In The Box
Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do
Puff Daddy - I'll Be Missing You
Will Smith & Jazzy Jeff - Summertime (Reminds me of so many summer holidays when I was younger)
Backstreet Boys - Backstreet's Back (Yes, me and my mates should have known better but for some reason this song totally hooked us when it came out)
            Republica - Ready To Go
            The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

There's just a few of the ones that I love from the 90's although I agree with the original poster with Oasis and Don't Look Back In Anger. Absolutely love that song, classic.
