    Re: Doctor Who!

Even the episiodes copied onto film for export were often junked.

The costs of keeping film archived are quite expensive, & after sales of B&W programming started to drop off the BBC started to dispose of programming they felt had no further value.

Luckily many reels were kept by overseas stations, & some BBC staffers managed to sneak home some prints.

And then, of course, there was Ian Levine, who saved a stack of films including the first Dalek story from destruction (as he's been reminding everyone constantly for about thirty years. We appreciate it Ian, honest).

The Ark wasn't a nine parter, only a four parter, and it's been available for years; i don't think it was ever lost. I'd say you were getting your titles mixed up, but there's never been a nine part Doctor Who story. There have been eight parters, a ten parter, a twelve parter and even a fourteen part story, but never nine.

                Re: Doctor Who!

It's now emerged that until 1999 a TV station in Sierra Leone probably had all but one stories from the first three years of Doctor Who, which they bought back in the sixties. That includes close to thirty episodes still missing from the BBC archives. Then, they had a war and the entire archive was destroyed, as indeed was the television station. Bye bye missing sixties Doctor Who.

War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothin'.

                  Re: Doctor Who!

I've not heard that before, but a TV archive in Cyprus was destroyed when the Turks occupied the north of the island in 1974.

It is thought that some episodes Dr Who were stored there.

Some others have been recovered from Cyprus, along with a lot of early Z Cars that was thought to have been lost forever.

Re: Doctor Who is 48 Today!

I love Doctor Who and always have since I was about 5! I used to get DW videos for my birthday when I was a kid, had a pretty great collection.

I like Matt Smith a lot, he's definitely got something of 'the Doctor' about him Series 5 kicked ***, series 6..not so much. But it'll be interesting to see where they go with the next series.

Loved Chris Eccleston too, but wasn't too keen on David Tennant (or a lot of RTD's writing).

Yeah, CB's audios really let him shine and Paul McGann has had some great ones, too! Loved Chimes of Midnight.

The Caves of Androzani is amazing.

I always liked Peter Davidson, he had a really great quality about him - his run was also consistently pretty good quality. I think he was also the unluckiest Doctor when it came to companions - the android, whiny Nyssa and the less said about Adric the better!

Nyssa was at least decorative. Tegan was just a nightmare.

It's very true - if only the Cybermen had been a bit more trigger happy in Earthshock!

Aw, I liked both Nyssa and Adric, ... not Tegan so much. I quite liked Davidson (Davison?) but why did he deliver all his lines out of breath? It's something that's been brought up by fans for years.
