I'm unsure how chip shop pies have changed over the decades because I have never bought one. How common are fried pies?

Another tricky find is cod roe that seems to have fallen in popularity.

I'm under the impression that traditional fish and chip shops are declining in popularity with younger people. In my locality chicken and chip shops and kebab shops are more popular. Traditional thick chips are increasingly superseded by thin French fries.

I only remember fish, wedge type chips and brown malt vinegar at the shop my grandmother worked at. No pies and I don't think there were mushy peas. They had some kind of coleslaw stuff though, in a little paper cup like with tartar sauce.

Have any chip shops ever sold poutine? Or is it something only found in Canada?

For the first time in ages on Friday I had fish & chips from a chip shop, bought as a treat by my wife as she needed to go to some nearby shop to get a lottery ticket & decided to go to the chip shop next door.

We are surrounded by chippys but the best ( in fact only decent one ) is the Chinese one who have substantial list of Chinese food and offer fish and chips as an afterthought ..

How ridiculous that all the English chip shops can’t compare !!

The chinese fry your fish from fresh they aren’t just lying in the display unit

Used to have something similar across from where I worked... Chinese food and fish n' chips. They had an indoor seating area semi-connected to the counter where you ordered. I never tried their Chinese items but had chips, and a bit less often, fish... takeaway for my lunch. Down the road was a bakery with the best sausage rolls, also long gone now. The area was 'redeveloped' and upscaled... everything around there is now expensive. Our old style green grocer and garden shop was remade into a flower boutique and the bouquets are three times the top price we would charge. We folded when the rents quadrupled from when we'd started.
